The Abington Bus
The
senior bus was on the chopping block in 2010 and was cut
in 2011 . There are numerous .
Why was the bus cut :
The cost to run it - $72,000
The number of users approximately 20
These figures afforded Oct
29, 2010 Budget meeting by outgoing manager Conway .The
number of trips is just a few thousand, apparently by the same
20 people
- which calculates out to about $3600 per person -
$24 per ride ( $24 out to the store and $24 back...?)
at taxpayer expense. Can you say " what were they
thinking " ? And have we checked - are the riders indigent
- or is it possible they have as much $ as the taxpayers being
asked to fund them?
The funding comes from about $48,000
worth of advertising (blight) on our bus shelters, a
14,000 grant and then yet another $10,000 from township
coffers. In essence , out of your pocket. Bus
shelters were set up to accept the advertising to create a
stream of income to initiate the bus. Some of the ads that
we have seen have been positively horrible . Movies, for
example, often use the most "provocative" scene from the movie
that they can find as an attention grabber. This is
what now lines your highways. Despite the fact that the
bus is being cut, you don't suppose you will be getting your
scenic roadway back, do you. Far from it. In fact, we are told
that the monies are already "accounted for" in other parts of
the budget now. Additionally, As of this year,
accommodations for advertising on bridges/ billboards/ buildings
etc are all being considered as well. Yes, your voices,
and your attention to what is going on are required if we are to
maintain our suburb as we would like it.

Abington Township, with John Spiegelman in charge, revamped the entire Township website at the end of 2015
and broke all the links to the information we had archived on this site for you.
In 2017, Manager Richard Manfredi arrived and assigned someone not qualified to redo the entire website again.
They not only broke all archived links we had reinstated, but made everything as impossible to find as they could.
Nearly all of our comments and recommedations to fix the Township website have been wholly ignored.
So we do need volunteers to work together helping the Township create a site that is functional and accessible.
We will be reinstating links as we find them....if the data is still available.
So... please let us know if you find a broken link. Send us the URL of the link
and the name of the page it is on, and if we can, we'll reinstate it.
Thanks for the help.
