ADDRESS CONCERNS TO JUST YOUR COMMISSIONER?  A
lthough you are frequently told to address your issues through your one Commissioner, your Commissioner may have a completely different point of view, so he may not present your position on an issue to the Board at all .  Since all the other  Board members  vote on each issue, it is important that they understand how you are being affected - even those not in your Ward.
Also your lone Commissioner, even if he IS presenting your view, is easily (and most frequently) out-voted by the other 14, as has been seen in spades in important issue after  important issue - especially zoning issues. The St Michael's debacle, The Wawa debacle, and others show us that the actions of one project , no matter what Ward it is in, affect us all re: amount of greenspace, traffic, stormwater, etc. .... .  These are the things that create quality of life and bring the value to our homes for ALL of us.   So it is important  to address ALL  of of  those who will be voting on your concerns.

ATTEND A MEETING  Besides calling or emailing a single Commissioner ( or several or all )  you can attend a Board meeting - where we residents have worked hard to enable you to have full speaking rights - even to bring up an issue that the Commissioners did NOT put on the agenda.  But sadly most eveeeery thing we worked so hard for was removed...

PUBLIC COMMENT GONE AWRY  You have 3 mins at the beginning of a Board meeting for agenda items and 3 minutes at the end of each full Board meeting for open comment on any topic . At Committee meetingS you ONCE HAD  3 minutes after each item was presented to address it - and  Committee heads could  allow you to speak freely at the end of any Committee  meeting to address topics not on the agenda . In 2019  Manager  Manfredi  removed many  of those rights - by creating the Consent Agenda , supposedly for things everyone agreed on to be voted as a block - but then  he put in controversial items that resesidents didn't realize they had to work to get out of there.....  nd then he invented the Committee of the Whole,  which was putting the next months Comittee items into on new format at the end of this months....making impossibly long meetings   going past 10 pm at times  (one month used to be done in 3 separate nights  - now 2 months were done in one night except for the final vote. It was ridiculous.
Also the COW  allowed you 5 minutes to speak.... but it was before any of the topics were explained and then allowed them to skip over the Committee meetings - which they now regularly did  --   effectively removing any "informed speech. We protested that this violated the intent of the Sunshine Law to allow a reasonable time to comment before a vote ....  . In response, and not satisfied with that level of removal of your rights, Manfredi then succeeded in removing even more  by changing  the Committee of the Whole to the "Working Session" -- supposedly a meeting that has no voting, so doesn't need to abide by the Sunshine Law  allowing comment "before a vote"  . He called it consensus - but ended up taking votes anyhow as to whether something would move forward to the Board of Commissioners .   In the meantime Hecker frequently did not allow comment by residents at all - sometimes just because he didn't like what they were saying. That is a clear violation of the Sunshine Act.

. By this time, all of the Committee meetings that were filmed and allowed you to address the Chair of the Committee for 3 minutes have been "done away with"  - and Manfredi is trying to bring things to the Plnning Commission or the full Board without any Committee review at all. He is changing the rules minute to minute and often breaking his own rules and policies whenever he feels like it , including not posting documents  and putting voting items in non-voting Working Sessions so he can squueze more into one session before hte public , making it difficult for the public to have any idea at all what time their issue will come uP

 .

I hope you will work to change this  - as these  actions are completely against the public interest.    See Public Comment for more info .

Knowledge is power. Stay informed to help shape your community and make a difference.

Abington Township revamped the entire Township website at the end of 2015 and broke all the links to the information. In 2017, under Richard Manfredi, someone inexperienced was assigned to redo the entire website again. The public was not asked what problems they would like to see fixed. Their new plan was not well thought out, so everything was very hard to find and there were giant paragraphs you had to slog through in order to find the pertinent one or two lines that you needed. Or if you were lucky enough to even find the meetings and agenda page, there was (and still is) a whole page of nonsense on top, so you think you're on the wrong page. Zoom limks are burrid in a giant paragraph, so people can't find them to attend the meeting. They know about these  problems - but have just decided to ignore us.... for the whole of Richard Manfredi's time here (with Tom Hecker's consent).

Now, in 2025, we are due to get a new Manager, and there are funds put aside to, once again, upgrade the Township website. We can only hope for a fresh chance at fixing some of these things, as our Township website is the best tool we have for communication and should be an easy, user friendly site for all.

We need volunteers willing to work together to help improve the Township site that everyone has to use,  to make it functional and accessible.

We will be repairing our broken links in this Abington Citizens site, too, and fixing some of our many, many typo's as much as is possible. (Yes, it's quite evident that, unlike the Township, WE don't have a paid staff of 275+ or a $93 million budget).

So...please let us know if you find broken links or typos. Send us the URL and/or and the name of the page it is on, so we can correct it.
Thanks for the help.
