THE NUTSHELL -
The Medical Mission Sisters' 136-acre property sits on Pine Road
in both Abington (41 acres) and Philadelphia (95 acres). There
are several properties on the site, but the property was
less than 20 percent covered in 2012 when Abington
approved the construction of 61 new apartments on part of the
property which had several other existing buildings
. (This may be the part called Mission Green) In late 2020 or early 2021
we learned of a proposal to develop this property that is in
both Philadelphia and Abington . It was proposed to have
135 independent living units/80 assisted living memory care
units/216 apartment units/118 carriage home units for a total of
549 units. The proposal came from Aquinas builders (Pres.
Len Poncia ) who said they would preserve the
medical Mission sisters headquarters, the cemetery, the
boathouse and some of the landscaping. This historic barn and
other buildings would be removed. The Medical Mission
Sisters had a worldwide mission helping refugees, immigrants,
trafficking victims, etc..
